In Ukraine today normal, hard-working men, women and children are facing not only death and destruction from an invading country but also the most heart-wrenching of choices. If we run for our lives, would our aging parents be able to walk to a border? If we stay what happens to our children? If we leave, what do we take? What gets left? Our cars, houses, or the apartments our life savings have provided? What happens to our dog, our cat? If our child is having treatment in a hospital, how can we care for him/her?
As millions face these terrible choices, what happens when they arrive in ‘’safety’’? They have only what they could carry, and they have travelled for days with little food or sleep, they have very little money. The men have stayed to fight. The women are the ones to take the children and maybe the aging parents. They may have some medicine, but the majority are only carrying clean underwear, socks, and vital documents. Basic essentials become life’s major luxury.
For more than the a decade our church has supported ChildsLife, an organization working in Romania, Moldova and the Ukraine since 1997. Local ChildsLife staff are working near the border of Romania to provide refugees a place to sleep, have a meal, provide hygiene items, milk for babies, and a change of clothes. Basic items that have a major impact. Items that don’t cost a lot, but to women and children who have had their entire lives destroyed, it shows to them that someone still cares.
